Hello there my name is Nick Cashman and this will be my first year teaching upper school science at QISS. I come from a small mountain town in Colorado. Where I obtained my insatiable curiosity for the outdoors and the natural world around us! Those who know me could describe me in 2 words enthusiastic and positive. If you have any questions please reach out, I would love to chat!

Chemistry

At QISS, students will learn chemistry with hands-on learning. Students are exposed to both organic and biochemistry, they learn about environmental impacts through a chemistry lens, and they are taught to explain macroscopic observations through an understanding the nature of matter.
We teach units 1 through 4, which covers all of our standards and benchmarks outlined by the "College Board Standards for College Success."

Morning Paper

Quarter 1 Newsletters

We have some fun topics to discuss in each class!

In chemistry, we are looking at the nature of science and practicing our lab observational skills.

In environmental science, we are looking at the various environmental issues we face and what it means to be sustainable.

And in AP Physics we are looking at motion and how to calculate instantaneous velocities and positions through time.

Quarter 2 Newsletter

The year is flying by, hard to believe that we are already in quarter 2.  We continue to have a bunch of fun learning science in my classes.

In chemistry, we are looking at minerals and how metals interact with each other.

In environmental science, we are talking about how biodiversity creates a sustainable ecosystem.

And in AP Physics we are exploring the world of dynamics and how motion is created by an imbalance of forces.

Quarter 3 Newsletter

Quarter 3 holds a lot of potential for higher order thinking for a lot of my scientists. We will look at some challenging and impactful topics!

In Chemistry, we focus on everything gaseous. This includes an in-depth look at the major gas laws including the ideal gas law. We will also spend some time looking at air pollution and it's negative effects on the human race.

Chemistry Newsletter

In Environmental science, we focus on our use of resources. This requires us to look at our use of fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources. We will also look at what the future of renewable energy might look like.

AP Physics is studying one of the final topics of the year, Oscillatory motion and waves. This is a really cool topic that takes an in-depth look at how sound works.
